Since men do not go through a well-defined period referred to as menopause, some doctors refer to this problem as androgen (testosterone) decline in the aging male, or what some people call low testosterone. Men do experience a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone with aging, but this also occurs with some disease states such as diabetes. Along with the decline in testosterone, some men experience symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, depression, and sexual problems. The relationship of these symptoms to the decreased testosterone levels is still controversial.

Thank you Edward for your comment, I appreciate your input. There are many studies in men's health that have shown a deficiency in testosterone leads to coronary artery disease, diabetes, obesity and prostate cancer in men. Men are more insidious in their symptoms than women at the decline; therefore, it is the history, physical exam and the lab work to make the diagnosis of hypogonadism in middle aged men. Once the testosterone is replaced blood sugars are improved, weight loss occurs, diabetic markers improve, and synmptoms of fatigue, depression, and libido improve. Hypogonadism can occur from opioids, oxidative stress, a profound illness, obesity, and primary hypopitutary secretion from adenomas. Each person has to have the throough workup to rule out conditions that can cause hypogonadism and andropause.
